Teaching the system of organisms at grammar schools in the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Systém živých organismů je jedním z témat vyučovaných v rámci biologie na vyšších gymnáziích. Ve své diplomové práci zjišťuji, jak k tomuto tématu učitelé přistupují, jaký důraz na něj kladou a jak aktuální informace žákům poskytují. Výzkum je kombinací kvalitativního i kvantitativního přístupu; užívá metod několikanásobného hloubkového rozhovoru a škálovaného dotazníku. Z výzkumu vyplývá, že většina učitelů používá z různých důvodů raději systém starší; nejčastěji proto, že nová podoba systému se příliš často mění a je složitá na pochopení. Aktualizace vědomostí učitelů i učebních materiálů pak nezávisí na věku ani na pohlaví, ale nejvíce na kraji, ve kterém učitelé působí. Součástí práce je i doporučení, jak současnou situaci na gymnáziích zlepšit.

Abstract:

The system of all living organisms is one of the topics taught at grammar schools as a part of Biology. In my thesis, I investigate how teachers approach this topic, the emphasis they put on the topic, and how up-to-date is the information given to the students. The research consists of both qualitative and quantitative approaches; it makes use of multiple interviews and a scaled questionnaire. The results indicate that most teachers use an outdated phylogeny for a number of reasons; mostly because the new phylogeny is too fast-changing and complex to understand. The willingness of teachers to update both their knowledge and their teaching materials is not dependent on their age nor gender, but predominantly on the region where they teach. Recommendations on improvements of the current situation are also included.
