Španělsko se ujalo úlohy předsedajícího státu Rady Evropské unie v první polovině roku 2010 ve velmi složité situaci. Stalo se totiž prvním státem ve vedení po přijetí Lisabonské smlouvy a navíc v době, kdy Evropu sužovala hospodářská a ekonomická krize. Spain held the post of presidency of Council of the European Union in the first half of 2010 in a really complicated situation. It was the first country in presidency after adopting Treaty of Lisbon and moreover in a time when Europe was suffering from economic crisis. As the main goal was set fullfilment of Treaty of Lisbon.
