Sound Aesthetics in the Work of P. T. Anderson

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo vystihnout specifický výraz, kterým se Paul Thomas Anderson skrze přístup ke zvukové stopě v součinnosti s dalšími složkami vyprávění vyjadřuje. Pro výzkum zvukové stopy v Andersonových filmech jsem zvolil metodu vypracování třech případových studií zkoumajících jeho práci se zvukem napříč žánrovým spektrem i historickým autorským vývojem. Z těchto případových studií vzešly styčné body Andersonova filmového vyjádření skrze zvuk, i jeho odlišnosti závislé na povaze světa, který Anderson v daných snímcích buduje. Specifika Andersonova přístupu ke zvukové stopě jsem pojal v kontextu vyprávěných příběhů a dalších výrazových prostředků filmové řeči s cílem zachytit narativní, estetickou či emocionální podstatu, kterou se v součinnosti snaží ve snímcích vyjádřit. Závěrem je vykreslení Paula Thomase Andersona jako autora, který se nejen způsobem práce se zvukovou stopou ukotvuje v doméně současných tvůrců filmového proudu amerického Indiewoodu.

Abstract:

The aim of this work was to capture a specific expression through which Paul Thomas Anderson conveys himself using the approach to the sound track in conjunction with other narrative elements. For the investigation of the sound track in Anderson's films, I chose a method involving the development of three case studies examining his work with sound across a spectrum of genres and historical authorial evolution. These case studies yielded common points of Anderson's cinematic expression through sound, as well as its variations dependent on the nature of the world that Anderson constructs in these films. I interpreted the specifics of Anderson's approach to the sound track within the context of the narrated stories and other expressive means of his film language, with the aim of capturing the narrative, aesthetic, or emotional essence that he strives to express in those particular films. In conclusion, a depiction of Paul Thomas Anderson emerges as an author who, through his approach to the sound track, solidifies his position within the realm of contemporary authors of American Indiewood cinema movement.
