Concept of an artist personality from the middle age till the end of 19th century

Abstract:

Práce si klade za cíl alespoň částečně popsat vyvíjející se společenské postavení umělce – jeho osobnosti vůči společnosti. Protože zvolené téma „Vývojové změny pojetí osobnosti umělce v kontextu doby“ je velmi rozsáhlé a k vzhledem k omezenému rozsahu práce jsem se tedy rozhodla soustředit pouze na epochy, jež byly pro vnímání osobnosti umělce klíčové; časové vymezení práce zahrnuje období středověku do konce 19. století s obecným přesahem do století 20. Pro úplné pochopení „neshody“ mezi umělcem a společností však bylo třeba sáhnout již k počátkům těchto projevů, kdy si umělci začali uvědomovat vlastní rozdílnost od společenských měřítek, jež se jim postupně stávala cizími. S postupným vývojem doby tato cílevědomá skupinová opozice umělců proti společnosti vedla ke zvýšení individualismu a ve svých důsledcích také k rozluce s obecenstvem. Tento vývoj vykrystalizoval až do přehnané stylizace umělců do osobností naprosto se odlišujících a vyčnívajících ze společnosti. Na druhou stranu to mělo za následek lhostejnost publika vůči osobnosti umělce. Největším problém při koncipování této práce pak představovalo vyhledávání vhodných zdrojů. Většina odborné literatury včetně recentních výzkumů se tématem zabývá spíše rámcově nebo v širších souvislostech. Proměny vnímání osobnosti umělce ze strany společnosti jsou v práci popsany se záměrem zachytit ucelený vývoj tohoto vztahu v dobovém kontextu. Důležitý fakt, který si je třeba uvědomit, že tyto posuny v chápaní osobnoti umělce nevznikly všechny najednou a nebyli dílem jednoho člověka, ale byl to vždy dlouhodobý proces a podíl na něm mělo několik výrazných jedinců, kteří cítili potřebu něco změnit a ve své snaze vytrvali.

Abstract:

The work aims to describe the development of an artist status - his personatlity against the public. Because the chosen topic “Concept of an artist personality in the context of the era” is very extensive and considering the limited size of the work I decided to focus on only the eras that were essential for the apprehension of an artist personality. The eras I have chosen cover the Middle Ages until the end of the 19th century with some exceeding to the 20th century. For the full understanding of “the conflict” between an artist and the public, it was however necessary to look at the beginning of these manifests, when artists started to feel their own difference from the public attitude, that had been gradually becoming strange for them. With the time emergence the focused opposition group of artists led to the increase of individualism and also resulted in the separation with the public. This development crystalized in an exaggerated stylization of artists into personalities absolutely different and outstanding from the society. On the other hand it resulted in the indifference of the public towards an artist personality. The biggest problem in conceiving this work was the search for suitable resources. Most of the specialized literature including the recent researches describes the topic rather generally or in a larger context. The changes of an artist apprehension from the society point of view are described in the work with the aim to portray the comprehensive development of this relationship in the period context. It is important to realise that these shifts in the comprehension of an artist personality did not come all at once and were not work of just one person. It was always a long process where a few significant individuals who felt their need to change something held on in their effort.
