Czech art auctions analysis: price determinants, masterpiece and afternoon effect.

Abstract:

Z databáze Artplus.cz bylo získáno 2 376 pozorování o prodejích obrazů v českých aukcích v letech 2014-2016 v aukčních domech Galerie Kodl, Galerie Art Praha, Aukční dům Zezula a Aukční dům Sýpka. Pomocí metody hédonické ceny a regresní analýzy bylo zjištěno, že signifikantně pozitivní vliv na ceny těchto vydražených obrazů mají charakteristiky: barevnost obrazu, pořadí díla v aukci, aukční domy Galerie Kodl a Galerie Art Praha, rok konání aukce, výskyt signatury, měsíc únor a říjen, olej na plátně a velikost obrazu. Signifikantně negativní vliv na ceny mají charakteristiky: žijící autor, měsíc červen, akt, technika kombinovaná, pastel, litografie, akvarel a koláž, malé rozměry obrazu a čtvercový formát. Na těchto datech byl potvrzen výskyt efektu klesajících cen v průběhu aukce, který byl určen na základě pořadí obrazů dražených v aukci. Výsledky naznačují vývoj aukce následovně: V první čtvrtině jsou ceny vyšší o 86,9%, ve druhé čtvrtině jsou ceny vyšší o 113% a ve třetí čtvrtině jsou ceny vyšší o 62,5% než v poslední čtvrtině aukce. Afternoon efekt se na základě poměru konečné a vyvolávací ceny nepodařilo signifikantně potvrdit, modely byly statisticky nevýznamné. Masterpiece efekt, tedy fakt, že obrazy mistrů dosahují nadprůměrných výnosů, nebylo na daném souboru dat možné korektně otestovat. Otestováno bylo 105 položek současných autorů narozených po roce 1950. Regresní analýza potvrdila, že za díla významných současných českých autorů umístěných v J&T Banka Art Index žebříčku jsou v aukcích dosahovány vyšší ceny.

Abstract:

Number of 2 376 observations have been obtained from online database Artplus.cz containing information about artworks selled in czech auctions during 2014-2016 in Galerie Kodl, Galerie Art Praha, Aukční dům Zezula and Aukční dům Sýpka auction houses. Hedonic prices model have been compiled and regression analysis have been held. Color, order in auction, signature, auction house Galerie Kodl and Galerie Art Prague, year, months February and October, oil on canvas and large dimensions have significantly positive influence on auction prices of artworks. Living author, month June, nude, mixed media, pastel, watercolor, collage, small dimensions and squared format have significantly negative influence on auction prices of artworks. Afternoon effect of declining prices during auction have been confirmed based on order of artworks in auctions. Results suggest that prices are higher by 86,9% in first quarter of auction, by 113% in second qurter and by 62,5% in third quarter towards last quarter of auction order of artworks. Afternoon effect was not statistically confirmed. It was not possible to properly measure Masterpiece effect that returns of masterpieces overperform the non-masterpieces. Only 105 artworks of contemporary artists born after 1950 by reputation have been tested. Regression analysis confirmed the fact that artworks of important contemporary artists placed in J&T Banka Art Index reach higher prices in czech auctions.
