Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce prozkoumává dva důležité aspekty v knize Velký Gatsby od F. Scotta Fitzgeralda: gender a sociální třídy. Má bakalářská práce se soustředí na pozici mužů a měnicí se pozici žen. V souvislosti s těmito změnami se pak práce zaměřuje na problematické zacházení se ženami a způsoby, jakými byly společností utlačovány. Dále se práce zabývá důležitostí vysokého společenského postavení, rovněž pak lidmi z vyšších poměrů a jak tito lidé občas pohrdali a zacházeli s lidmi z nižších sociálních vrstev. Tato práce shrnuje, že Fitzgeraldova kritika společenského postavení a genderu je úměrná kritice materialismus a Amerického snu, kterou jeho kniha nabízí.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis examines two important aspects of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby: gender and social class. In addition to discussing how women of the 1920s were treated and oppressed by society because of their gender, this thesis will also highlight the importance of relations between the wealthy high society and the lower social classes, whom the rich sometimes despised. Fitzgerald, the thesis concludes, offers a social critique of class and gender equal to his novel's criticisms of 1920s materialism and the American Dream.
