The School of Applied Arts in Brno during the Protectorate (1939-1945)

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the history of the School of Arts and Crafts in Brno during the occupation of the Czech-Moravian territory by Nazi Germany (1939-1945). With the declaration of the clerofascist Slovak State, and shortly afterwards the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, all art school teachers of Czech nationality had to leave the Slovak territory and accept positions in Czech-Moravian schools. This fate also befell the teaching staff of the avant-garde School of Arts and Crafts in Bratislava (ŠUR). Most of the professors were transferred to a relatively conservative institution, the School of Art and Crafts in Brno (ŠUŘ). The main representative, progressive educator and founder of the ŠUR, Josef Vydra, saw the transfer to Brno as an opportunity to implement his pedagogical reforms, which corresponded with the interests of the Nazi state establishment. Vydra was at the time also the Protectorate's minister for artistic subjects in vocational schools, which, together with the mode of passive collaboration, ensured the school's relative prosperity and space to work. The school was reorganised with a specialisation in advertising and fashion. Both were run by Vydra's progressive-minded collaborators from Bratislava. During wartime, ŠUŘ also cooperated with the Protectorate's industry, domestic production and held exhibitions, for which it received financial support from the Protectorate. Its activities lasted continuously from the beginning of the Nazi occupation until the autumn of 1944 when all vocational schools were closed by decree. From that moment on, the entire teaching staff, headed by Josef Vydra, prepared for the end of the Second World War. The thesis sought to analyse the activities of the school during the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, taking into account the limited conditions of the Second World War and the position of its headmaster Josef Vydra.

Abstract:

Predkladaná diplomová práca sa zaoberá históriou Školy uměleckých řemesel v Brne počas okupácie česko-moravského územia nacistickým Nemeckom (1939-1945). Vyhlásením klérofašistického Slovenského štátu a krátko na to Protektorátu Čechy a Morava, museli všetci učitelia umeleckých škôl českej národnosti opustiť slovenské územie a prijať miesta na česko-moravských školách. Tento osud stretol aj profesorský zbor avantgardnej Školy umeleckých remesiel v Bratislave (ŠUR), ktorého väčšina bola premiestnená na pomerne konzervatívnu inštitúciu, Školu uměleckých řemesel v Brně (ŠUŘ). Hlavný predstaviteľ, progresívny pedagóg a zakladateľ ŠUR Josef Vydra videl presun do Brna ako príležitosť pre realizáciu svojich pedagogických reforiem, ktoré zhodou okolností korešpondovali so záujmami nacistického štátneho zriadenia.. Vydra bol v tej dobe zároveň protektorátnym ministrom pre umelecké predmety na odborných školách, čo spolu s módom pasívnej kolaborácie zabezpečilo škole relatívnu prosperitu a priestor na prácu. Škola bola reorganizovaná so špecializáciou na odbor reklamný a módny. Oba viedli Vydrovi progresívne orientovaní spolupracovníci z Bratislavy. ŠUŘ rovnako v dobe vojny spolupracovala s protektorátnym priemyslom, domáckou výrobou a usporadúvala výstavy, na čo dostávala finančnú podporu zo strany protektorátu. Jej činnosť trvala kontinuálne od začiatku nacistickej okupácie až do jesene roku 1944, kedy boli nariadením zatvorené všetky odborné školy. Od tej chvíle sa celý učiteľský zbor na čele s Josefom Vydrom pripravoval na koniec druhej svetovej vojny. Práca sa snažila zanalyzovať aktivity školy počas Protektorátu Čechy a Morava s prihliadnutím na obmedzené podmienky druhej svetovej vojny a postavenie jej riaditeľa Josefa Vydru.
