The impact of the Great Depression on individual layers of british society in 1930s

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analýza dopadu velké hospodářské krize na jednotlivé třídy britské společnosti ve třicátých letech 20. století. Práce nabízí komplexní pohled na vývoj třídních rozdílů v kontextu velké hospodářské krize. Teoretická část se zabývá vybranými následky deprese, primárně vysoké míry nezaměstnanosti. Praktická část se věnuje třídní stratifikaci a analýze třídních rozdílů v oblasti příjmu, bydlení, dopravy a volného času. Základní hypotézou práce je, že velká hospodářská krize měla negativní dopad na společnost Velké Británie a ještě více prohloubila sociální rozdíly mezi jednotlivými třídami. Hypotéza byla zamítnuta, protože analýza prokázala, že krize měla naopak pozitivní dopad na společnost a sociální mezitřídní rozdíly se nezměnily, nebo se zmenšovaly. V otázce, proč zůstala pracující třída loajální vůči Konzervativní straně, došla práce k závěru, že za úspěch Konzervativní strany může primárně rozpad ostatních tradičních stran. Rovněž bylo zjištěno, že k radikalizaci pracující třídy nedošlo kvůli zlepšujícím se sociálním podmínkám velké části britské populace.

Abstract:

The purpose of Bachelor thesis is to analyse the impact of the Great Depression on individual classes of British society in the 1930s. The thesis offers a comprehensive view of the development of class differences in the context of the Great Depression. The theoretical part of this thesis deals with selected consequences of depression, primarily the high rate of unemployment. The practical part is devoted to class stratification and the analysis of class differences in income, housing, transportation and leisure time. The basic hypothesis is that the Great Depression had a negative impact on the society of Great Britain and deepened the social differences between the individual classes even more. The hypothesis was rejected because the analysis showed that the crisis had a positive impact on society, and the social differences between classes did not change or decreased. When asked why the working class remained loyal to the Conservative Party, the thesis concluded that the success of the Conservative Party was primarily due to the breakup of the other traditional parties. It was also found that the radicalization of the working class did not occur because of the improving social conditions of a large part of the British population.
