Relationship of Belief in a Just World of Prisoners to Perception of Justice, Well-Being and Recidivism

Abstract:

Tento výzkum se zaměřuje na funkci víry ve spravedlivý svět (BJW) u vězňů. Konkrétně zkoumá vztahy mezi BJW a vnímáním spravedlnosti, well-beingem a recidivou. Bylo zjištěno, že vězni s vyšší osobní a obecnou BJW vnímají soudní řízení, zaměstnance věznice a vězeňské záležitosti jako spravedlivé. Silnější vztah byl mezi osobní BJW a vnímáním spravedlnosti oproti obecné BJW. Tyto vztahy se potvrdily i v konkurenci intervenujících proměnných – osobního a rodinného zázemí, emocionality a kriminální minulosti. V případě vnímání spravedlnosti soudního řízení hrálo roli i to, zda měla odsouzená osoba děti. Když děti měla, tak hodnotila soudní řízení jako méně spravedlivé. Dále lidé, kteří disponují pozitivní emocionalitou, vnímají zaměstnance věznice jako spravedlivější než lidé, kteří jsou méně pozitivní. Proti původnímu předpokladu se nepotvrdilo, že vězni s vyšší osobní BJW budou aktuálně pociťovat více pozitivních emocí a méně negativních emocí. Ukázalo se, že osobní BJW neobstojí jako prediktor v konkurenci intervenující proměnné emocionality jako osobnostní dispozice. Nebyl potvrzen ani předpoklad, že prvotrestané osoby budou mít vyšší míru osobní a obecné BJW. Rozdíl v míře BJW u prvotrestaných osob a recidivistů byl nesignifikantní. Korelační analýza ovšem odhalila, že čím vyšší měla odsouzená osoba obecnou BJW, tím méně jí bylo uloženo trestů odnětí svobody.

Abstract:

The study examines the function of belief in a just world (BJW) in prisoners. Specifically, it discovers the relationship between BJW and perception of justice, BJW and well-being, BJW and recidivism. It was discovered that the prisoners with stronger BJW perceive legal proceedings, prison employees and prison affairs as just. Stronger relationship existed between personal BJW and perception of justice instead of general BJW and perception of justice. These links were held even after controlling for extraneous variables – personal and family background, mood level and criminal career. Concerning justice of legal proceedings the parental status of inmates was important. If the person has children the justice of legal proceedings was perceived as less just. Also the respondents with higher mood level perceived the prison employees as more just than the respondents with lower mood level. The original assumption that prisoners with stronger personal BJW would experience more positive and less negative emotions was not supported. Personal BJW is not a good predictor of the present well-being next to a mood level as personality disposition. Further the assumption that the first time prisoners would have stronger personal and general BJW was not supported. The difference of BJW at first time prisoners and prisoners with recidivism tendencies was not significant. Although correlational analysis showed that the stronger general BJW the prisoner had, the less imprisonments pun-ishments the prisoner had in life.
