End-of-life decisions from the perspective of nurses

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývala problematikou end-of-life decisions z pohledu všeobecných sester. V České republice zatím neexistuje mnoho literatury a studií o problematice rozhodovacích procesů na konci života. Jelikož vědecký i medicínský pokrok jde stále dopředu, bude stále víc přibývat nutnost těchto rozhodnutí. V teoretické části jsme popsaly pojmy z dané problematiky, základní etické principy, problematiku dříve vysloveného přání, rozhodovací proces, kategorizaci léčby, marnou léčbu, dystanázii a fenomén defenzivní medicíny, paliativní péči a eutanázii. V empirické části jsme provedly kvantitativní výzkum pomocí převzatého dotazníku. Stanovily jsme si hlavní cíl, a to zjistit pohled všeobecných sester na problematiku end of-life-decisions, a 4 dílčí cíle. Výsledky jsme porovnávaly s podobnými studiemi. Závěrem lze říci, že pohled sester na problematiku rozhodovacích procesů na konci života je ovlivněn národností, vírou, vzděláním a kulturou.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to study the issue of end-of-life decisions from a nurse's perspective. There is currently little academic discussion in the Czech Republic about the issue of end-of-life decisions. However, as science and medicine moves forward, this issue must be addressed. In the theoretical part of this thesis, we will discuss terms, basic ethical principles, advance directives, end of life decisions, categorization of treatment, futility treatment, dysthanasia, defensive medicine, palliative care, and euthanasia. In the practical part of this thesis, we obtained quantitative research from a questionnaire that was a part of a European study. In this study, the main goal is to record and analyze the perspective of nurses on end of life decisions, and to compare these results to to other studies. In conclusion, it may be said that the perspective of nurses on the issue of end of life decisions varies bases on their home country, religious beliefs, and culture.
