Sound Design of Eraserhead and PI from Perspective of Anxiety as a Philosophical Concept

Abstract:

Tato práce se pokouší využít filozofický a psychoanalytický koncept úzkosti a aplikovat ho na oblast zvukového designu filmových děl Mazací hlava a Pi. Úzkost totiž v podání mnou vybraných autorů je klíčem k hledání autenticity, a stejně tak autenticitu hledá mnoho umělecký a filmových děl a autorů. Práce si neklade za cíl pojmout úzkost nebo filmová díla v jejich obsáhlosti, ale kombinací dvou oborů vytvořit zajímavou interpretaci. Hledá i místa, ve kterých se zvuk odpojuje a sahá „dále, než obraz“. Následně se pokouší zobecnit zvukově- dramaturgické prostředky, které takovou úzkost vyvolávají, s tím, že si je plně vědoma, jak moc nedokáže vystoupit z kontextu bádání. Co může být dramaturgické pravidlo v jednom díle, může v jiném fungovat zcela naopak.

Abstract:

This thesis attempts to use the philosophical and psychoanalytical concept of anxiety and apply it to the area of sound design of the film works Eraserhead and Pi. Anxiety, presented by the authors I have chosen, is the key to the search for authenticity, and authenticity is also sought by many artistic and film works and their authors. The work does not aim to understand anxiety or film works in their comprehensiveness, but it tries to create an interesting interpretation by combining those two fields. It also looks for places where the sound disconnects from picture and extends "further than the image". Subsequently, it attempts to generalize the sound-dramaturgical devices that cause such anxiety, being fully aware of how much it cannot step out of the context of its own research. What may be a dramaturgical rule in one work may work quite the opposite in another.
