Anthropoid Operation, its course and consequences

Abstract:

Na území Čech a Moravy byl v období druhé světové války zřízen okupovaným Německem dne 16. března 1939 Protektorát Čechy a Morava. Adolf Hitler jmenoval říšským protektorem Konstantina von Neuratha, kterého později jako zastupující říšský protektor nahradil Reinhard Heydrich. Zástupcem říšského se stal Karl Hermann Frank. Protektorátním prezidentem byl Emil Hácha. Na základě snahy nepoddat se okupační moci vznikaly odbojové organizace. V Protektorátu to byly např. Obrana národa, Politické ústředí, Ústřední vedení odboje domácího nebo Petiční výbor věrni zůstaneme. V Londýně působila exilová vláda vedená Edvardem Benešem. Z jejího podnětu byly zahájeny zvláštní operace, jejichž cílem bylo Československo, kde měly být parašutistickými skupinami prováděny zpravodajské, sabotážní a spojovací úkoly. 29. prosince 1941 byla v pořadí třetí výsadková skupina Anthropoid vysazena na území Protektorátu. Jejími členy byli Jozef Gabčík a Jan Kubiš, kteří dne 27. května 1942 provedli atentát na Reinharda Heydricha. Ten později v nemocnici dne 4. června 1942 na následky atentátu zemřel. Sami parašutisté pak po boji s gestapem ukončili svůj život v chrámu sv. Cyrila a Metoděje v Praze v Resslově ulici dne 18. června 1942. I přes to, že atentát způsobil smrt mnoha lidí, je povětšinou vnímán jako jeden z nejvýznamnějších aktů odboje v celoevropském měřítku, ovšem s celosvětovým dosahem.

Abstract:

On 16th March 1939, during the Second World War, the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia was established in the area of Bohemia and Moravia by the occupant Nazi Germany. Adolf Hitler appointed Konstantin von Neurath the Reichsprotektor. Later, he was replaced by Reinhard Heydrich who had been the Deputy Reichsprotektor. Karl Hermann Frank became the Deputy Reichsprotektor. Emil Hácha was the President of the Protectorat. Resistance movement appeared as an effort not to surrender to the occupating power. In the Protectorate, these were for example: Obrana národa, Politické ústředí, Ústřední vedení odboje domácího or Petiční výbor věrni zůstaneme. The exile government led by Edvard Beneš operated in London. The government iniciated special operations, the target of which was Czechoslovakia, where intelligence, sabotage and communication tasks were to be organised by parachute units. On 29th December 1941, Anthropoid, the third parachute group, was sent to the Protectorate. Its members were Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, who assassinated Reinhard Heydrich on 27th May 1942. He died in hospital on 4th June 1942. The parachutes ended their lives in Orthodox church dedicated to Saints Cyril and Methodius in Resslova street in Prague after a fight with the Gestapo on 18th June 1942. Even though the assassination caused deaths to a lot of people, it is considered one of the most important actions of resistence taken in the whole Europe with the impact worldwide.
