The Myth of the American Dream in Jim Jarmusch’s Stranger Than Paradise

Abstract:

Po staletí je Amerika pro zbytek světa místem, kde lze žít svobodně, kde je možné zažít cosi výjimečného, dosáhnout na štěstí nedosažitelné kdekoli jinde. Se svými ideály svobody a rovnosti, rozlehlou krajinou a pestrou populární kulturou se Amerika stala místem veskrze mýtickým, kde je reálně možné prožít sen. Konkrétně ten americký. Málokterý americký režisér se ve své tvorbě zabývá americkým snem tolik jako Jim Jarmusch. Snad nejzřetelněji s ním pracuje ve svém druhém celovečerním filmu Podivnější než ráj. Ve své diplomové práci zkoumám nejprve linii filmové tradice, na kterou Jarmusch v tomto filmu navazuje, následně se zaměřuji na způsob, jakým Jarmusch s mýtem amerického snu ve filmu pracuje. Dějová linka filmu de facto kopíruje cesty prvních Američanů – film začíná příjezdem do Nového světa, pokračuje objevitelskou cestou na západ a uzavírá jej vytvoření ráje na zemi – jde o dosažení amerického snu se vším všudy. Onen mýtický ráj je zde nicméně trochu podivnější, než by postavy pod okouzlením vidiny amerického snu čekaly. Jarmusch si zde s tradicí mýtu pohrává a mýtus dekonstruuje a aktualizuje. V práci se zaměřuji zejména na prostředky, kterými Jarmusch oné dekonstrukce a aktualizace dosahuje.

Abstract:

For centuries, America has been a place for the rest of the world to live in freely, to experience something special, to achieve happiness unattainable anywhere else. With its ideals of freedom and equality, vast landscapes and diverse popular culture, America has become a mythical place where it is possible to experience a dream. Specifically the American dream. Few American directors work with the concept of the American dream as deeply as Jim Jarmusch. In his second feature film, Stranger Than Paradise, he works with it the most clearly. In my diploma thesis, I first examine the line of film tradition that Jarmusch develops further, then I focus on the way in which Jarmusch works with the myth of the American dream in the film. The plot of the film copies the paths of the first Americans – the film begins with the arrival in the New World, continues with a journey of discovery to the west and concludes with the creation of paradise on earth – it is about achieving the American dream in its entirety. However, the mythical paradise is a little stranger than the characters under the enchantment of the vision of the American dream would expect. Jarmusch plays here with the tradition of the myth and deconstructs and updates it. In my work I focus mainly on the means by which Jarmusch achieves this deconstruction and update.
