Life changes of mothers who have lost a child

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl zjistit, jaké jsou životní změny osmi žen, kterým zemřelo dítě, a porovnává jejich zkušenosti s teoretickými koncepty. Nabízí náhled do této společností víceméně tabuizované problematiky a hledá podobnosti a rozdíly v prožívání jednotlivých matek. Zkoumá jejich prožívání ztráty, změny v rodinných vztazích a profesním životě, osobnostní změny a celkově podává svědectví o životě s touto traumatizující zkušeností. Hlavními tématy jsou životní spokojenost, nalezení nového smyslu života, vyrovnávací strategie a v neposlední řadě i posttraumatický růst. Z důvodu úzkoprofilového zaměření tématu a následné nedostupnosti velkého počtu vhodných respondentů byl zvolen kvalitativní přístup s Interpretativní fenomenologickou analýzou dat (IPA) a v souladu s doporučeními pro používání této metody byla data sbírána pomocí polostrukturovaného rozhovoru. IPA se zaměřuje na porozumění žité zkušenosti člověka. Výzkumníkovi tím umožňuje detailně prozkoumat, jaký má konkrétní daná zkušenost či událost pro zkoumaného jedince význam, což nám umožňuje porozumět určité problematice či procesu – fenoménu (Smith, Flowers a Larkin, 2009). Tato analýza je zaměřena na subjektivní zkušenost a význam, který zkoumaný člověk oné své zkušenosti přikládá a výsledky této studie tedy nelze zobecnit na celou populaci žen, kterým zemřelo dítě. Získané výsledky tak není možné aplikovat do terapeutické praxe, nicméně mohou sloužit jako cenná výpověď a sloužit coby vodítko pro doporučení a realizaci dalších výzkumů v dané problematice. Navíc mohou ukázat lidem ve stejné situaci jako respondentky, že i tuto traumatickou zkušenost lze překonat a žít smysluplný život.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to identify life changes of eight women whose children have died and to compare their experience with theoretical concepts. The thesis offers an insight into this taboo issue and seeks similarities and differences in many aspects of life of each mother, such as the bereavement, changes in family relationships and career life, and changes of personality. In sum, this analysis reflects their lives after this traumatic experience. The main issues are life satisfaction, finding a new sense of life, coping strategies and post-traumatic growth. Due to such a specific topic and thus a low number of suitable respondents, an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) has been chosen. In accordance with this analytical method, the data was collected by using a semi-structured interview. IPA also focuses on understanding of lived experience. It enables the researcher to examine the significance of certain experience or event for an individual, which may also help to understand a specific issue or a process – a phenomenon. (Smith, Flowers a Larkin, 2009). This analysis focuses on subjective experience and significance that the respondents give to their experience. Therefore, the results of this paper cannot be generalised to all women whose children have died. For this reason, the results cannot be applied to a therapeutic practice either. Nevertheless, they might be a precious testimony and serve as a tool for further recommendations and researches in this field. Moreover, people that find themselves in the same situation like the respondents can see that even this traumatic experience may be overcome and they can live a meaningful life again.
