Creative approach to learning through reading in one-to-one sessions with a pre-teen

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem rozvíjení dovednosti čtení při individuální práci s žákem ve věku deset až třináct let a zvláště tématem jejich motivace vyhledávat anglickou literaturu z vlastního zájmu. Teoretická část práce naznačuje, proč je tak důležité vést mladé studenty angličtiny ke čtení a jak jim určité učební přístupy mohou čtení zpříjemnit. Jedna podkapitola je pak věnována specificky problematice individuální výuky a roli učitele v ní. Konečně teoretická část pojednává také o způsobech identifikace individuálních potřeb žáka. Praktická část práce poskytuje informace o zúčastněné žákyni a zkoumá její učební styly a strategie, získané informace jsou poté společně s informacemi uvedenými v teoretické části použity pro sestavení učebního plánu v rozsahu deseti setkání. Cílem práce je motivovat žákyni ke čtení, ale víc než to, práce si dává za úkol navrhnout interaktivní přístupy ke čtení a sledovat, které z přístupů a aktivit přinášely úspěch.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the topic of reading with pre-teens in one-to-one classes and especially on motivating them to reading books in English for pleasure. The theoretical part of the thesis indicates why it is important to guide young English learners to reading and how certain teaching approaches can be used to make it more attractive. One chapter specifically deals with teaching one-to-one and teacher’s role in such setting. Finally it also shows ways of recognizing individual student’s needs. The practical part of the thesis provides background information about the involved learner and analyses her learning styles and strategies, all of those are together with the information discussed in the theoretical part used to compile ten lesson plans evolving around a story book. The aim of the thesis is to motivate the learner to reading but more than that, it strives to offer more interactive ways of reading and analyze which of the approaches and activities were met with success.
