The Architecture of School Buildings in Brno in the 1920s

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá architekturou budov gymnázií, základních a středních škol, postavených v Brně ve 20. letech 20 století. Na začátku je zaměřena na vývoj naší architektury v rámci celé Československé republiky - z důvodu lepšího pochopení výrazných změn, které v tomto období v oblasti architektury proběhly. V další kapitole se rozebírá největší moravská metropole, jak si stála ve 20. letech, dále pak její urbanistický vývoj a rozvoj moderní architektury až ke vzniku funkcionalismu. V následující části se práce orientuje na školní budovu jako na centrum vzdělávání. Nastiňuje situaci poměru škol českých a německých a samozřejmě vývoj od školní budovy zaměřené na reprezentativní vzhled exteriéru na úkor nepříliš vhodného interiéru, směrem ke školním budovám, které jsou postaveny za účelem kvalitní výuky. Tento nový vztah architekta k potřebám žáků se soustřeďuje především na pedagogické a hygienické požadavky, aby škola nebyla pro žáky a studenty depresivním prostředím, ale stavbou, která jim dovolí volně dýchat, poskytne jim sluneční svit a tím pak lepší vstřebávání informací. Pro ucelenější představu jak architekti brněnských vzdělávacích ústavů přemýšleli, zahrnuje tato práce i stručný přehled nejvýznamnějších staveb z jejich tvorby pro Brno v daném období. Stavby, většinou nesoucí se v duchu moderní architektury, přinesly tehdy městu pokrokový vzhled a světový význam. Na závěr je zde zařazen katalog vybraných školních budov, které od 20. let 20. století zkrášlují mnoho brněnských čtvrtí.

Abstract:

This work is concerned with the architecture of the grammar-scholls, primary schools and hight schools buildings built in the twenties of the last century. First it’s directed to our architecture progress whiting all Czechoslovakia – for better undrestanding the big changes which passed in the architecture in this period. The bigest Moravian city is analysed in the second chapter. How it stood in the twenties, its urban progress and modern architecture development to the functionalism. The work is oriented on the school buildings as a centrure of education in the next chapter. It hints the situations of the czech and german schools and of course the progress from school building sight to the representative exterior aspect to the prejudice of not very acceptable interior, to the scholls built with the view of the good quality schooling. This new relation between architect and the student‘s needs is first of all concentrated on pedagogue’s and hygienic requierements, to make school not depresive environment for students but to be a building which let them breathe, gives them daylight to make studies easier for them. To make general idea how the architects of the Brno education buildings were thinking this work includes short review of the most significant buildings of their creations in Brno in this era. Buildings mostly built in the modern architecture spirit brought to the town progressive look and the world interest. The list and description of the school buildings which from the 20th of the last century beautify many of Brno’s quarters is in the end of this work.
