Teaching about human races in primary school geography curriculum in the Czech Republic and in selected European countries

Abstract:

Ve své bakalářské práci se zaměřuji na výuku o lidských rasách v zeměpisu v České republice, Německu a Velké Británii. Celý výzkum je zaměřen na 2. stupeň ZŠ a odpovídající stupně vzdělávání v zahraničních zájmových zemí. Teoretická část je zaměřena na definici pojmu rasa s ním v návaznosti pojmy etnikum a národ. Do kapitoly jsem zařadila jak biologický pohled, tak pohled společenskovědní. Dále jsem prováděla rozbor kurikulárních dokumentů zájmových zemí a vyhledávala téma lidských ras. V praktické části své práce jsem analyzovala vybrané české a zahraniční učebnice a zaměřovala jsem se na výskyt rasové otázky. Stanovila jsem si několik charakteristických znaků, které jsem následně v učebnicích vyhledávala a analyzovala. Také jsem vedla polostrukturovaný rozhovor s několika českými učiteli zeměpisu, který mi pomohl blíže nahlédnout do výuky zeměpisu orientované na téma lidských ras. V závěru práce jsem uvedla zjištěné výsledky výzkumu, zodpověděla jsem otázky a ověřila stanovenou hypotézu. Výsledkem práce je zhodnocení výuky o lidských rasách v České republice, Velké Británii a Německu a následná komparace. Pomocí výzkumu jsem došla k závěru, že výuka o rasách se v České republice a vybraných evropských zemí diametrálně liší, přičemž v případě Velké Británie a Německa není téma lidských ras zaneseno v učebnicích ani v kurikulárních dokumentech. V České republice se stále setkáváme s konceptem klasifikace populace podle barvy pleti, zatímco ve vybraných evropských zemích se charakteristika populace řeší z pohledu etnicity a národnosti, nikoli z pohledu rasy.

Abstract:

This thesis discusses and compares teaching about human races in geography classes in the Czech Republic, Germany and United Kingdom. Its primary focus is on the second level of primary schools in Czech Republic (grades 6-9) and the corresponding levels of education in foreign counstries of interest. The theoretical part defines the concept of race, followed by the concepts od ethnicity and nation. It includes the biological and socials points of view. Further, it analyzes the inclusion and extent of teaching about human races as presented in curriculum documents from the countries of interest. The practical part surveys selected czech and foreign selected textbooks and their discussions of racial issues. It establishes and researched several characteristic features. Additionally, it presents insights gained from semi-structured interviews with selected czech geography teachers. The conclusion states the found results, answeres research questions and verifies the hypothesis. The result of the thesis is an evaluation of teaching about human races in the Czech Republic, Great Britain, and Germany and subsequent comparison. Based on the research, I concluded that teaching about races is diametrically different in the Czech Republic and selected European countries, while in the case of Great Britain and Germany, the topic of human races is not included in textbooks or curricular documents at all. In the Czech Republic, we still encounter the concept of classification of the population according to skin colour, while in selected European countries the population is characterized from the point of view of ethnicity and nationality and not from the point of view of race.
